Why Pressure Treated Lumber is Still the Right Choice

Pressure treated lumber is wood that has been chemically treated under pressure to resist rot, insects, and moisture deterioration. Despite the growth of composite and PVC decking alternatives, pressure treated lumber remains the dominant decking material in the region for several compelling reasons:

  • Cost “” Pressure treated is significantly more affordable than composite or AZEK decking, making it accessible for homeowners of all budget levels
  • Availability “” Pressure treated lumber is available at every lumberyard and home center, making repairs and additions straightforward
  • Workability “” PT lumber works with standard carpentry tools and techniques, allowing for custom designs and on-site modifications
  • Durability “” Modern pressure treated lumber treated with MCA (micronized copper azole) or ACQ is highly resistant to rot and insects when properly installed and maintained
  • Proven performance “” Pressure treated decks have a 40-year track record in New England climates. We know how they age and what they need to perform well long-term

What We Use “” Lumber Grades

Not all pressure treated lumber is the same. We use #1 grade pressure treated lumber on all structural elements “” posts, beams, and joists. Number 1 grade has fewer and smaller knots, straighter grain, and better dimensional stability than lower grades. On deck boards, we use #1 or #2 grade depending on the specific application and budget. We never use substandard lumber to cut costs on a structural element.

For posts and any framing in contact with the ground or within 6 inches of the ground, we use ground-contact rated lumber (UC4A or UC4B rating). Above-ground rated lumber used in ground-contact applications deteriorates significantly faster “” this is a common shortcut that causes decks to fail prematurely at the post bases.

Footings “” The Foundation of Every Deck

The single most important structural element of any deck is the footings. Massachusetts requires deck footings to be poured below the frost line “” a minimum of 48 inches in most of southeastern Massachusetts. Footings that are too shallow will heave and shift every winter as the ground freezes and thaws, causing the entire deck structure to move, loosen, and eventually fail.

We pour concrete footings to the correct depth for every deck we build. We use tube forms sized appropriately for the load they will carry. We set post anchors in the wet concrete and allow adequate cure time before framing begins. There are no shortcuts on footings “” the footing is what keeps a deck level and stable for its entire life.

Fasteners and Hardware

Pressure treated lumber contains copper compounds that corrode standard steel fasteners. We use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel screws, nails, joist hangers, post bases, and structural hardware throughout every pressure treated deck build. Fasteners and hardware that corrode will eventually fail and can leave rust stains on the deck surface that are difficult to remove. We use the right fasteners from the start.

Deck Board Installation

Deck boards are spaced at approximately 1/8 inch on installation “” they will close up slightly as the wood dries and reaches equilibrium moisture content. Boards that are installed too tight will cup and buckle as they dry. Boards that are installed too loose look sloppy and create trip hazards. We install deck boards with consistent spacing throughout using spacers to ensure uniformity.

Deck boards are fastened with structural screws driven at a slight angle through the face of the board into the joist below. We do not nail deck boards “” nails back out over time and create raised fastener heads that are a trip and splinter hazard.

Maintenance

A new pressure treated deck should be allowed to dry for at least 6 months before applying stain or sealer “” new PT lumber contains significant moisture and will not absorb stain well until it dries. After the initial drying period, applying a quality penetrating deck stain or sealer will significantly extend the life of the wood and preserve its appearance. We recommend reapplying stain or sealer every 2-3 years depending on sun and weather exposure.
