    What Makes a Good Set of Deck Stairs

    The difference between stairs that feel natural to walk up and down and stairs that cause you to constantly watch your feet comes down to consistent rise and run. Massachusetts building code requires a maximum 7-and-three-quarter inch rise and minimum 10-inch run for deck stairs. More importantly, every step in a flight must be identical — inconsistent stair dimensions are the primary cause of trips and falls on residential stairs.

    We cut every set of stringers precisely. We check our measurements before and after cuts. We set the base of stringers on concrete pads rather than directly on the ground to prevent rot from the bottom up. We use structural screws, not nails, to fasten treads and risers. And we through-bolt railing posts rather than face-screw them so they do not loosen over time.

    Stair Materials

    For pressure treated decks we use pressure treated 2×12 stringers and treated or composite treads. For composite decks we can match the decking material on the treads to create a seamless look from deck to grade. We also build custom wood interior stairs and can match existing stain or paint colors on stair replacement projects.
